Director Search on the CIPC register

Finds the South African companies a person is recorded as a director of, and whether each directorship is active.

  • Source: CIPC

Director Search confirms whether an individual is listed as a director of any company registered with the CIPC in South Africa. It is useful for identity corroboration, and for insight into a person’s business affiliations before you extend them credit or sign them on. These are the affiliations people most often forget to mention.

What you get, and where it stops

What you get

  • The directorships recorded at the CIPC against that person, and whether each is recorded as active on the register.
  • Register evidence you can set beside what an individual tells you about their business interests.

Where it stops

  • Ownership. A directorship does not show who owns or has a controlling interest in a company.
  • Anything about companies registered outside South Africa.

Chain it with

A flow is several verifications run as one journey. These pair naturally with Director Search.

What you need to run it

South African ID number
The ID number of the person whose directorships you want to find.

What comes back

Each directorship recorded against that identity, with its active status, returned in real time.

Sample result
Directorships
The companies the person is recorded against as a director.
Status
Whether each directorship is recorded as active.

Every result is filed with a timestamped audit record.

Outcomes you will see, and how to read them.
OutcomeWhat it means
Directorships returnedThe register records one or more directorships for that person, each showing whether it is active.
None returnedThe register records none. That is an absence of an entry, not evidence of anything else.

Where it fits in your compliance programme

Where you are establishing who stands behind a business customer as part of customer due diligence under the Financial Intelligence Centre Act 38 of 2001 (FICA), or corroborating what an individual has told you about their interests, this produces the register evidence. It is an input to the beneficial-ownership question rather than an answer to it.

Questions

Does a director search show who owns a company, or a person’s other business interests?

No. It shows the directorships recorded at the CIPC. Shareholdings, beneficial ownership, trusts and interests held through other structures are outside it.

Can I run it with a CIPC company verification?

Yes. Run Director Search on the person you are dealing with, and CIPC Company Verification on any company it surfaces, in the same flow.

How do I run Director Search, and what does it cost?

It runs on its own or as one step in a flow. Run it from the portal, or through the API with a sandbox to build against (credentials on request). There is no public price list: book a demo and a specialist prepares a pricing proposal built around your volumes. You can pay as you go from a wallet or settle monthly on invoice.

About results

Veriflow will perform the Services with the reasonable skill and care of a competent provider of identity-verification services in South Africa. Veriflow transmits results sourced from third-party data sources, including registered South African credit bureaux, banks, official registers and published watchlists. Veriflow does not compile that underlying data, does not warrant its accuracy, completeness or currency, and gives no warranty that any verification result is correct.

A Result is an input to the Client's own assessment. Veriflow does not decide whether any person or entity is onboarded, declined, priced, offboarded, employed, granted credit or reported, and makes no recommendation as to any of those outcomes. Those decisions are made solely by the Client, on its own criteria and under its own legal obligations, and the Client must not use a Result as the sole basis for any adverse outcome affecting a person.
